SUNNYHURST BOWLING GREEN 2019 COMMUNITY ASSET OR NOT ?

While many bowling greens are being forced to close due to lack of funding or interest Sunnyhurst is fortunate to still have a bowling green in a lovely setting .Perfect for a friendly game of bowls particularly on a sunny day.

The green, pavilion and surroundings are maintained by the SunnyhurstBowling Club. The club is totally self-funded paying an annual rent to Blackburn with Darwen Council( the only council green asked to do so) as well as all the running and maintenance costs.

During this winter2018/19 the club has had to outlay over £3,000 on a new path to the pavilion and extra expenditure on the green itself.

Thanks must be made to Crown Paints for a donation of £2,000 and Denis andElizabeth Jepson and Chris and Beryl Thayne for holding fund raising events contributing to a sum of just over £1,000  towards the upkeep of the green and surroundings. Indeed over the past few years Denis, Elizabeth, Chris and Beryl have raised a considerable amount of money towards the bowling green, many thanks.

Membership and visitor numbers are relatively small and the club has only kept the green open thanks to donations, fund raising and sponsorship. With basic annual costs of around £1,600 the club barely makes ends meet.

The bowling green is an often unnoticed and forgotten part of our community (tucked away behind a row of cottages just beyond the Sunnyhurst Public House and reached by a path besides the pub). The club committee feel there is a need to remind everyone that it is there and that new committee members and anew increased membership are needed. Without this input the green and club could fold possibly within the next couple of years.

Therefore increased membership and fund raisers are needed to keep the bowling green for future use. If you think the green is worth keeping for the future please join! Membership details are attached.

New pathway open

Please note when entering the bowling green the pathway to the clubhouse is now to your right and along the hedge line.

The old raised pathway to the right should not be used by members as the new path provides a safe access route to the clubhouse.

This will be followed by the placement of a new footpath around the right side edge of the green and the existing raised path being decommissioned.

Support from Crown Paints has enabled the footpath work to be undertaken(more detail to follow) and support from volunteers who maintain Whitehall green enlisted for green reparations.

SINGLES DAY WINNERS KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY

The singles event took place on Sunday the 2nd September and we were lucky that the weather held out for us with a lovely late summers day.

A total of 11 members turned out which whilst disappointing given the number of registered members didn’t prevent this hardy bunch from having a great afternoons bowling.(later turning into even more of a social event thanks to David and Lesley Jennings contributions of liquid refreshments)

Whilst the green was not at its best with a bit of a bobbly surface and some bare patches following the scorchio weather we have experienced it didnt stop the precision bowling of our members with a small number of seasoned observers spectating.

At around 5.20pm after some tense moments in the finals  the winners were announced as John Hacking (mens singles) and Sue Hacking(ladies singles).

Well done to both and to all who attended.

Pictures taken on the day can be found in PHOTOS MENU.

Whitehall Friendly is the hottest since 76

In the words of the Daily Mirror 1976 “Whew what a scorcher”

To say the green was quick on the day given the 30 deg heatwave was an understatement.

The Whitehall Green was at its most dangerous with boomerang corners and ski slopes encouraging those without the tenderest touches to hit the gully during their first few bowls without trying.

This didnt put off our friendly competition which saw members from opposing clubs paired with each other adding to the social aspect of the occasion.

A good number turned out and the comp lasted until around 5pm following a competitive yet friendly game.

As usual the Whitehall members did us proud with refreshments and  a wide selection of cakes and fancies.

Its back to Sunnyhurst next year and once we have the full results of this wonderful day out they will be posted on your website.
